New Remain Overnight Apron

Indianapolis International Airport

Summary:

In 2023, the new Remain Overnight (RON) Apron project at the Indianapolis International Airport was completed, providing additional parking for up to eight additional aircraft, leading to additional flights IND can offer and increased operating flexibility for airlines. Prior to beginning this project, every available boarding gate and parking position was occupied at the airport.  BF&S led the design and utility coordination for the project and served as the resident project representative during construction. The apron is 29,000 square yards and used an emerging technology to incorporate in-situ carbon mineralization into the concrete pavement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which required a modification of standards and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. Other project challenges included a complex utility relocation plan, which included three duct banks containing critical airport and FAA communication lines and a 20” water main. Extensive coordination with contractors, the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA), AT&T, Citizens Energy Group (CEG), and the FAA was required to ensure outages associated with this work resulted in minimal operational impacts to the airport, local businesses, and the traveling public. The project was completed 60 days ahead of schedule for $12.4 million. The project was awarded the 2024 Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award from the Indiana Chapter of the American Concrete Paving Association.
