US 41 Ohio River Bridges Rehabilitation

Vanderburgh County, IN
INDOT Central Office

Summary:

The US 41 corridor, south of Evansville, is a principal arterial for commuters frequently traveling between Indiana and Kentucky. There are six bridges that lie between the Ohio River and I-69 interchange. Extensive in-depth inspections, including non-destructive testing of the concrete decks, were performed and comprehensive inspection reports were developed to determine the most effective rehabilitation relevant to their levels of deterioration. Four bridges (400’ each) over Cheatam Slough and Ohio River Overflow received new concrete decks along with some superstructure modification, while the other two bridges over Eagle Creek (1200’ each) received an LMC overlay along with the removal of pin and hanger details.

Due to congestion along this corridor, two lanes of traffic in each direction had to be maintained during the project. This necessitated installing a temporary bridge over Cheatam Slough which was used in both phases of construction.
