Summary:

The “Restore Sagamore” project was the City of Lafayette’s signature, multi-phase venture aimed at repurposing a primary Lafayette thoroughfare that had been relinquished to the City from INDOT. Design included maximized use of the existing storm sewer trunk line, new storm sewer, and structures. The project improved storm water runoff as a result of green design techniques including rain garden medians and a new detention pond. By utilizing sustainable green infrastructure design solutions for stormwater runoff, approximately $850,000 in cost savings was realized through the elimination of new storm sewer construction. Additional costs savings were recognized as there was no longer a need for off-site stormwater detention.

Additional design features included the installation of water main, retaining walls, multi-use trail, sidewalks, decorative lighting, landscaping with irrigation, and the modernization of nine existing traffic signals and one new mid-block HAWK signal. BF&S’s Utility and Railroad coordination efforts were key components to the project’s successful timeline. This project required the highest level of communication and coordination due to its impact on numerous businesses and the traveling public. A project-specific website was used to disseminate information to the community and all stakeholders. Sagamore Parkway is now a beautiful gateway to Lafayette, safely serving vehicular and pedestrian movement.
