Runway 9-27 Pavement Rehabilitation
Madison County Airport, Ohio
Summary:
The Madison County Airport chose a long-term cost-effective solution to address pavement deterioration on Runway 9-27. Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) was performed, which consists of pulverizing the existing asphalt pavement, adding a chemical admixture and recompacting the material to provide a strong base for a new asphalt overlay. FDR is an environmentally sustainable approach that eliminated all the cracking and stresses in the existing asphalt pavement while the chemical admixture improved the pavement strength. In addition to the runway work, the taxiway connectors to the runway were brought into compliance with the current pavement design standards by widening which required relocation of some lighting fixtures. BF&S completed the design and performed construction inspection. The project was completed in 2022 ahead of schedule and under budget and was awarded the General Aviation Project of the Year in 2022 by the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
